SM-UG
On Thursday 1st of November, I am taking part in Sheffield RAG’s Spiderwalk. This is a 13 mile charity night hike through the peak district.
I am so grateful to everyone who sponsors me. If you want to, you can at: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-web/fundraiser/showFundraiserProfilePage.action?userUrl=CezMabe
I am really hoping that I don’t fall on my face in a pile of mud, get completely soaked by rain or get ridiculously lost… but if any of this does happen I will know it is worth it as I am raising money for a very worthy cause.
Some of the money goes to RAG’s local charities but most will be going to SM-UG, Sexual Minorities Uganda. This important charity fights to gain legal and social equality for LGBT people in Uganda.
This summer, at Sheffield DocFest, I watched a documentary ‘Call Me Kuchu’ filmed in Uganda. It showed people have their names and photos published in newspapers and have to flee their homes. It showed the hard work of LGBT activists to oppose the bill to have a death penalty for being gay. It also showed the price these activists paid.
Ahh my writing is all rambly, please watch this trailer for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGiRMaJydWg
I don’t realise how lucky I am to live in Britain. The days when I feel hard-done-by that I can’t get married or annoyed when I get ‘lesbo’ shouted at me in the street, I should remember to be glad to be free, free kiss who I like, raise a family with who I like and free to be myself. Not imprisoned, not in hiding, not dead and not grieving the unjustful killing of my friends.
